#1. CREATE A PLAN…. UNDERSTAND HOW AND WHEN TO USE THE METHODS – Research and learn about the methods. Understand how the methods will work best to fit your needs. Create your plan and set your rules. Make sure your plan allows for consistency (can be used by anyone anywhere anytime). Researchers stress the importance of providing immediate consequences and rewards. Children learn best from repetition and consistency.
#2 INTRODUCE AND DISCUSS YOUR PARENTING PACKAGE- Introduce Take-Out-Time-Out and Star Stash. Explain the rules with everyone involved (i.e. caretakers, children, grandparenst, teachers). Make sure everyone completely understands when and how the method will work. Maybe in written form as reference as well (ex. Star Stash Contract). Children should know that TAKE OUT TIME OUT and STAR STASH will always be near and can be used anywhere anytime!
#3 IMPLEMENT THE METHODS - Make sure to provide rewards and consequences immediately after behavior is displayed. When using time out, remain calm, cool and collected with little emotion. When using time in, reward with great emotion and praise. Be consistent!
When using TIME OUT, place Take-Out-Time-Out near you to monitor and ensure the child is thinking, therefore learning. Do not provide attention during the time-out. Once the time-out is complete, discuss the behavior and what would have been acceptable. Always end a time-out with a hug, kind words or a high five. Turn it into a positive learning experience, be consistent and it will work!
When using TIME IN, provide positive attention and reinforce good behavior and accomplishments with Star Stash stars immediately following. Also provide verbal praise and a hug. Use the Star Stash contract for child to be involved in the planning process.
“You are on your way to building strong concrete walls, with a healthy loving environment inside those walls…. The formula for a happy home.”
“Remember, it is our job as parents to teach our children. Be efficient and effective and have more time for fun!”
TIME OUT is the most researched, used and successful discipline technique. Time-out has been used for generations (i.e. go to your room, stand in the corner) and will be used for many generations to come. The method is used to turn negative child behavior (i.e. hitting, biting, defiance) into a positive learning experience. Teaching children to “think before they act” by removing them from playtime and placing them on Take-Out-Time-Out (a recognized “think spot”). Take-Out-Time-Out allows for parents to use a consistent spot anywhere anytime. Parenting experts stress the importance of using a consistent spot. Also, keep in mind that the most effective form of “time-out” is when used in conjunction with “time-in”.
How to use "time out" by the Super Nanny
TIME IN is when giving child positive attention and rewards for appropriate behavior. The Star Stash portable rewards system teaches children by reinforcing good behavior with positive attention and immediate rewards anywhere anytime (i.e. manners, respect, potty, chores, introducing foods, excel in sports or school). If a child does not live in an environment that includes time-in, the child feels neglected with out positive attention. Time-in is a necessary element when using time-out. They go hand in hand and create the healthy balance for a strong and loving relationship.
HAPPY PARENTING!
